On foot…

Lazzaretto – towards the North exit of the Port. It is a pentagonal building, formerly used as quarantine hospital. Nowadays it hosts artistic exhibitions.
Arco di Traiano (Trajan’s Arch)– remaining within the port, towards the South. This arch represents one of the most evident and well preserved remains of the Roman civilization. Once it represented the northest gateway of the Port of Ancona.
Shopping streets of Ancona – leaving the Port through Varco della Repubblica you are already in the city center. Corso Garibaldi and the 2 parallel streets are the shopping center of Ancona.
Shops opening hours:
winter season (until 15th May): from 9 to 12.30 am / from 4 to 7.30 pm
summer season (until 15th September): from 9 to 12.30 am / from 4.30 to 8 pm
Via della Loggia – leaving the Port through Varco della Repubblica, we suggest you to stop and have a look at Teatro delle Muse (Theatre of the Muses). Go on along via della Loggia to visit:
- Loggia dei Mercanti (Merchants’ Loggia).
- Museo del Bambino e del Giocattolo (Kid and Toy Museum):
visiting hours: Tue-Sat. from 11am to 7 pm; Sun. from 3.30 to 7 pm; closed on Monday.
Ticket: adults € 2 ; free entrance for children.
- Santa Maria della Piazza (St. Mary of the Square’s Church)
Piazza del Plebiscito also known as Piazza del Papa – leave the port through Varco della Repubblica and pass in front of Teatro delle Muse. Then turn into Corso Mazzini, take the first on the left (via degli Orefici) and you get to Piazza del Papa. You will easily recognise it thanks to the Pope statue; the church located behind the statue is called San Domenico (St. Dominic’s Chruch).

By car…

Cattedrale di San Ciriaco (St. Cyriac’s Cathedral) – it is sited on the hill overlooking the port of Ancona. Leave the port through Varco della Repubblica and turn into via della Loggia. Drive up to the end of Lungomare Vanvitelli and then of via Giovanni XXIII.
Visiting hours: from 8 to 12 am / from 3 to 6 pm (in the summer until 7 pm)
Masses schedule: working days at 9 am
Sundays and holidays at 9 – 10.30 – 12 am and 5 pm (in the summer at 6 pm)
Note: you can also reach the cathedral on foot,…..but only if you like slopes and long walks!!!
